Project Alkalion has been developed as a Type A Community-Led Action under the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters” (Mission Ocean), and engages the TASC RestoreMED network — clustering activities, Sustainathons, and a final event — to share results and a replication roadmap with other Mediterranean coastal communities.

The science

A pathway with credible gigaton-scale potential.

Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is an actively researched climate intervention, increasingly recognised as one of the few CO2 removal pathways with credible gigaton-scale potential. Independent assessments — including by the National Academies of Sciences, the IPCC, and leading ocean research institutions — have identified OAE as a serious candidate for durable, measurable carbon removal.

Ocean Ionics' contribution is engineering: turning the underlying chemistry into a process that runs efficiently, at scale, on renewable energy, and with rigorous environmental safeguards.

Verification & monitoring

Every facility built to be measured and watched.

Every facility we deploy is designed for continuous environmental monitoring and full carbon accounting. The Port of Estepona demonstration, conducted with the University of Málaga, establishes our baseline protocols for measuring both the CO2 removed and the local marine response. These protocols are being developed in alignment with emerging international standards for marine CDR verification.
